I beg to submit the following report on work clone during the past mouth as follows.

Giving to the large amount of maintenance work done during the month, wc were only able to put in twelve days on the construction of the Hall Street drain during which time we completed close on two chains of this work. About tire middle of the month we experienced a small tidal wave which threw up a largo quantity of debris and , sand on to Revell Street. Owing to the beach Vicing so flat and open wo have only cleared the sand off the- roadway aiid tlite footpath on the eastern side of North lie veil Street. A section of the Bealey and Weld Street’s drains which had collapsed, were renewed during the month. The . water supply took off considerably during the past fortnight which necessitated going over the pipe line between the reservoir and, the Lake. Some very bad leaks were located and repaired. The collars in places are showing sigiis of decay. On Slip Hiil the pipes are leaking badly at the collars mainly, caused through the ground giving way and slipping in to the river. In the near future there is going to be some heavy traffic from tlie three sawmills in this locality aad unless the road is widened at, this particular place, I am afraid ive will have trouble with the pipe line. The supply to the reservoir now shows a eohsiderablo improvement since the overhaul. ' The usual street cleaning and maintenance work lias also been attended to during the month.—Received. From Manager of Abattoirs, reporting for August there were examined 6 cows, 87 bullocks, 220 sheep, 34 lambs, 12 pigs, 2 calves. Condemned nil; fees. for period £SB 6s.—Received. From Library Committee as follows: I have to report that the Library Committee met this afternoon and considered a letter from the Librarian and recommend that (1) That the Librarian’s sister relieve her during the hours she is unable to personally attend; (2) That the hours of attendance be reduced as follows:—On Wednesday 7.30 to 9.30 only (no afternoon attendance), on all evbiiings except Saturday, to close at 9.30 p.m. Your Committee have to express satisfaction with the Librarian’s attention to her duties, but feel that {lie library should be open on the Wednesday evenings, and that it should not bo closed before 10 p.m. oh Saturday.— Received and adopted. The Council rose at 8.25 p.m.
