TAXATION QUESTION

MINISTER’S EXPLANATION

(Our Parliamentary Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, September -0. The effect of the new Land, and Income Tax Bill upon the free of ncome tax provision of the war loan debentures, was the subject of a 'question put to the Prime Minister by Mr E. Newman (Manawatu). Tlie Prime Minister replied he was -aware that a fear had been expressed by some, that the debentures were being interfered with and that the income from them would be taxed. That was not the case the people had gone wrong. He was advised that the reference in clause 13 was to assessable income. Income de-, rived from free of income tax debentures was not assessable. The Government had not the slightest intention of committing any breach of its undertaking in connection with war loans.
