After transacting formal business the House went into committee of supply to further consider the estimates. The first clause taken was Education £258,562. Mr Sidey moved ah amendment that the item “Director of Education £705” be reduced by £2 as an indication that the Director of Education about to be appointed, slioiild be a man with educational experience in New Zealand. This was defeated by 38 to 14 and tlie vote passed at 1.10 a.m. after eight hours discussions. The Mines Department £41,845 was passed without di&cussioil.
On the Cook Islands vote £15,625, Mr Massey said a commissioner would be offered a vacant position as Stipeiidary Magistrate. The vote was passed. The House rose at 1.25 till 7.30 p.m on Monday. I
