VALEDICTORY.
A very representative gathering of citizens at the Dominion hotel yesterday afternoon met to say good-bye to Mr James Downey who is leaving for Dunedin. Mr Coulson (Deputy Mayor) presided in bis usual able manner. The speakers were:—Messrs Coulson (representing the citizens), Jeffries (representing the miltary); Lawn: (President Southern Football Division); Dee (Referee's Association); Jarman and MneKay (fellow boarders); McCullough; (Otago University) and Sergt.-Majo: Mclntosh (Defence). The speakers stressed Mr Downey’s splendid record at the war, Main Body to the end; his support of sport, as referee and secretary; liis interest in Muniepal affairs and courtesy to all; finally regretting his loss and wishing ail success in his sphere. The usual toasts with musical honors were honoured. A recitation was given by Dr. Simpson and a song by Mr A. Dowell; Air Lawn presiding at the piano. A very pleasant gathering ended with the singing of “God Save the 1 Klt'ng.” Mr Downey is leaving on 1 , Saturday morning overland for Dune- ' din, where lie is taking a course of dentistry at tho University.
