The monthly meeting was Held at the County Chambers at 8.20 p.m. Present: —Messrs It. Wild (voted to the chair), P. R. Stewart, M. H. Houston, T. W. Duff, J. J. Mclntosh, and D. J. Evans. Mr W. J. Butler forwarded an apology Sor absence. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and the outward correspondence was approved . INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.
From Tourist Department regretting owing to shortage of paper the cruise in the West Coast Sounds could not be published, and returning 1 manuscript and illustrations with thanks.—Received To bo returned to Mr P. McKenzie. From Prime Minister promising to give the suggestion regarding paper manufacture in New Zealand careful consideration.—Received. From Commissioner of State Forests stating the Department fully realised the importance of the wood pulp industry, and the matter would be considered when the Director of Forests submits his reports. The letter added that in January last specimens of our beeches, tawa, kamahi, and the exotios Pinus radiatn. and Phirieio were sent to the Imperial Institute to test their suitability for pulp-making.—Received as satisfactory and to await further information.
From Sir George Fenwick, Dunedin on same subject, thanking the Chamber for action in making representations and stating if the reports encouraged the project the eapital would be forthcoming.—Received. From Secretary Air Board replying that the provision of Key Aerodromes was recognised and a general recommendation was made to the Government; also thanking the Chamber for information supplied. From Canterbury Chamber of Commerce protesting against the proposal to exempt from taxation tlie remuneration of Ministers and Members of Parliament and Judges of the Supreme Court; also objecting to Members of Parliament accepting free passages by the U.S.S. Coy.—Received and protest supported.
From Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce urging combined action by tlie united Chambers to determine if possible the best means of abating the present industrial and social unrest of the Dominion.—Received.
From T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., replying steps would be taken under tlie Public Bodies Empowering BilL to permit contributions to the Progress League.—Received. From Chief Postmaster with respect to the adjustment of mail matter.—Received with thanks. From Hokitika Borough Council regarding the display of guns in front of the Government Building and statin the Mayor would enquire regarding information.—Received.
From A. H. Richards, Auckland, thanking the Chamber for tlie good wishes expressed at the time of liis departure from Westland, and wishing tlie district every success.-—-Received. From S. W. Richardson, Matainui, forwarding signed copies of the South Westland railway petition.—Received ; and Mr Richardson thanked for his efforts.
Fjrom Canterbury Progress League supplying particulars of affiliation and reference to coming itinerary.—Received; The Chmber to co-operate as far as possible in making the tour of the district a sucoess. GENERAL. A vote of £5 was made towards the compilation of the early history of AVestland.
Mr Duff referred to the difficulty the coal dealers had in procuring supplies of coal for domestic use. It was resolved to bring the matter under the notice of the Board of Trade with a view to more adequate supplies being sent regularly to the local dealers.
The meeting concluded at 9 p.ra with a vote of thanks t 6 the chair.
