At the criminals sittings, true bills were found in all 8 cases including murder indictment against John Sharp for alleged murder of his daughter Sophia at Rangahere, and against Helen Glegg in connection with the death of a girl Olive May Pyle. Arthur Jolm Henry Shaw came up for sentence on a charge of making a false declaration as to age, to enable marriage and was fined £3. Venor Alan Burnside for breaking and entering was sentenced to detention for reformative purposes for a period not exceeding 5 years. Ellen Gwendoiin Mary Bains, Nora. Evelyn Lewis, and Margaret May Smith for breaking and entering and thoft at Caversham industrial school were order ed to be detained for reformative purposes for a term not exceeding 5 years. Patrick Martin Neilan and Stephen Leonard Murdoch for breaking and entering and theft, Neilan was ordered to undergo reformative treatment and Murdoch wa# released on probation for 3 years. Both prisoners ar e youths. A CIVIL ACTION.

ALIEN SUBJECT’S CLAIM. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug 3. The civil action, in which Charles Theimer, an alien enemy subject, proceeded against Allan Hopkins, to recover £350, being a deposit paid in respect of the purchase of a house, and damages for alleged misrepresentation, was concluded to-day. The jury found in favour of defendant, and judgment was entered up accordingly, with costs.

TO DEFRAUD THE CUSTOMS. CHRISTCHURCH, August 3. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning Harry Vallerman and 'Edmund Russell Jones, importer, carrying on business at Auckland under the name of Yallerman and Co., were charged that with intent to defraud the revenue of Customs by evading or enabling some other person to evade the payment of full duty on 10 cases of china-ware, they did make an entry -which was erroneous, in that declaration made by E. R. Jones, as required by the Customs Act, 1913, stated that a. fair market value of the goods was £6l 11s 6d whereas the value was in fact £262 Os 3d. -A separate information has also ‘been laid against Edmund Russell Jones. Mr Donnelly, acting Crown Prosecutor, asked for an adjournment till August 24th. which was granted.
