COAL SHORTAGE. CHRISTCHURCH, July 7

“Owing to th© extraordinary demand for coal, delivery cannot be, made within twenty-eight days from the receipt of order*.”

WAR MEMORIAL LOAN. INVERCARGILL, July 7

The proposal of the South Invercargill Borough Council to raise a special loan of £70,000 to erect a hall as a war memorial was rejected by the ralepayers, to-day. The voting was:—For proposal 164; against 342.

FORESTRY LEAGUE. WELLINGTON, July 7

At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Forestry League to-night, it was agreed that the Government he requested immediately to investigate the value in the Dominion or elsewhere ol our jUaire timber, and if it should lie found that it can be utilised for furniture purposes, that every tree of millable size shall ho sawn, and the timber thus saved.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Sir James CL Wilson; Lion. Sec. Mr T. N. Fmkett; Auditor, Mr D. McKay; Mem hers of the Council, (ten retiring annually, Sir W. C. Buchanan, Messrs E. Hall, 11. Reynolds, A. Bathgate, F. W. Williams, E. Maxwell, H. F. Hiiast. and W. H. Field.

SALE OF ESTATE. HASTINGS, July 7

The Titoki Estate, near Waipawa, of 2091 acres, the property of the late \Y. P. Archibald, was sold by auction m two lots this morning. Both lots were purchased by Mr R. A. M’Kenzie, ol Palmerston North, for £71,418 ss.
