Messrs J. Ballantyne and Co. drawattention to special lines in ladies wear. Applications for tickets for the ball in connection with the Royal visit, are coming in rapidly and suggest a large and representative attendance from all parts of Westland.
The Westland County Council will hold a regular sitting on Tuesday night at the ordinary hour. The business will include consideration of the levy proposed for hospital and charitable aid administration.
During the year 1919, at the Magistrate’s Court, Hokitika there were 86 plaints entered for the total sum of £14:19 13s Id, of these 59 were tried, £982 15s being isued for, and £BBO 18s 5d being recovered.
At Westport on Saturday, in the presence of a goodly number of spectators, White Star seniors defeated the Rival Club, after a hotly contested game by 11 points to 3. Unfortunately the game was rather strenuous at times, resulting in two of the players, Lockey and Bowatcr being injured. Mr Arthur Leaver ,who lias resigned the three offices of Mayor of Westport, Chairman of Duller Hospital Board, and Chairman of Buffer Railway League, leaves New Zealand in a few-days, for Australia. He lias been appointed South Island representative for an English leather firm. Mr Leaver returns shortly to New Zealand.
At'the Opawa Amateur Swimming Club’s carnival on Saturday, C. Atkinson broke bis previous New' Zealand breast-stroke record of 78 2-5 secs for 100 yards, which lie established in 1915 at Napier. His new' time was 77 l-ssees or 1 l-ssecs. better. This was not accomplished under the stimulus of coinpetition, for it was made in an exhibition swim in which Atkinson was not paced.
The gold badge of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, which is to bo presented* to the Prince of Wales on his being made patron of the association during liis visit to Wellington, is to be enclosed in a handsome greenstone case, bearing on the lid a representation in silver of the Prince of Wales feathers.
Prsumabjy as the result of the flood in : the river on Sunday following the heavy . rain, on Monday morning at tlip end of the south wall, on the beach side there .were quite a large number of eels washing up on the beach as the waves receded, and then wriggling their way back to the water again. The eels were of the salt water variety, which are considered by far the best for table purposes. | A Reputation from the Wanganui and Rangitikci County Councils waited upon the Hon. J. G. Coates, Ministei for Public Works, on Friday, with a view to ascertaining the Government policy in regard to the problem of the maintenance of the arterial roads of the Dominion. The Hon. J. G. Coates, in reply promised to consider the whole matter of toll-gates and subsidies and give his decision. He was aware they wanted to know’ the Government policy in regard to main and arterial roads, and probably his own views, but he was not prepared to make a statement yet because it was a matter upon which Cabinet w'ould require to be consulted. The Public Works Department was preparing a report, or a scheme for dealing with main and arterial road maintenance, and it would probably be the basis of future action and legislation. The Government recognised that it had to face this question. He would let them know the resolt at an early date. ‘
