Last night the members of the St. Mary’s Debating Society held a very pleasant speech competition in their Club Rooms. A fair sized audience gathered to hear the competition and all appreciated the efforts of the si>oakers. The subject to be spoken on was “Should Capital Punishment be abolished?” Mr G. J. P. Sellers kindly consented to act as Judge and critic and each speaker was allowed ten minutes for liis speech. The majority of the speakers favoured the negative view and a good deal of sound matter was put forward for the retention of Capital Punishment. ’The Judge in summing up placed the speakers as follows. Mr Wormington, Mr McCullough. Mr McCarthy Senr., Mr McCarthy Junr. and Mr Ward. Mr Ward was the only speaker who favoured the abolition of Capital Punishment. It may be mentioned that there was only a difference of ten marks between the first and the last placed • speakers, so that it can easily be seen that all the slice dies were of a fairly high standard and all showed vast improvement. The criticisms of Mr C. J. P. Sellers .were very much to the point and should.do a great deal towards drawing the attention of the speakers tp their weak points. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the able manner in which he performed the duties of Judge- The next meeting of the Clulb will lie on Tuesday evening next when toasts (proposals and replies) will he the order of the evening.
