INFLUENZA.
ri.n mves AcaociAuoN- —roi’vniGnx.i WELLINGTON, January 6. During the week ended January 5, 21 eases of influenza were reported in Wellington' Health District and eleven of pneumonia. Dr Makgill (Acting Chief Health Officer) stated to-day that the Dominion returns for the past fortnight, "showed a very large diminution in the number of eases of influenza and pneumonia. During the week ending December 22, there were 248 eases of influenza notified throughout the Dominion whereas in the Aveek ending January 5, there were but 107 notifications.
Regarding pneumonia, 43 cases were notified on tile week eiicjing J}gcember 22nd and 25 cases in flip week ending January 5. The chief djniiijnfion of influenza, hp said, was in Auckland where the pumher of eases in f-he week ending December 22nd was 224, while only 78 cases were reported in the wepk ending January 5. In Canterbury there had been a marked "decrease also. During the week ending December 22nd, 29 cases of influenza and 10 cases of pneumonia were notified and only five influenza and five pneumonia cases during the week ending January 5, 51 Dr Makgill also stated that for a long time the number of pneumonia cases following influenza bad risen and the existence of such cases was of very little ’Significance indeed. There was every reason to be satisfied with the present position, and there was nothing to suggest any alarm whatsoever.”
