EIGHT MILES FROM PETROGRAD

Apparently it has broken down, • as Yudenitcli is retaining Gatchina. STOCKHOLM, Oct. 20. A Foreign Office communique states that the legations and consulates at Petrograd, including the Swedish, were sacked by the Bolsheviks. LONDON, Oct. 20. A south Russian anti-Bolshevik communique states the Tsaritsin sector is quiet. This is owing to the Bolsheviks having recuperated after heavy losses sustained in an unsuccessful attack on the 17th.
The -Cossacks are continuing their advance westward of the Khoper river and routed a Bolshevik division ,taking prisoners 5000 troops with 27 guns. A column consisting of 10,000 Letts and Chinese, attacking westward of Orel, was enveloped, half surrounded, and entirely destroyed. The Bolsheviks made an unexpected attack on the 15th, as a result of which they occupied Kieff city. Deniken, with the aid of reinforcements, has since re-occupied the city, except the"" western suburbs. The Bolsheviks have thus sustained heavy losses in vain attempts to recover important territory lost in the past month.
Bolshevist newspapers state that a “Regiment of""Jesus ” is operating against the on the eastern front. It is composed of priests, deacons, and other ecclesiastics clad in their robes and stoles.
Tilt regiment attacks carrying uplifted crosses and chanting prayers. This has ,a demoralising effect on tho Red troops, who find no strength to re- v sist the mystic powers of the attack- * ers.
The communists are sending picked troops against the regiment. Correspondents describe as important the part that priests are taking in Deniken’s operations.
