Among the business done to-day at the New Zealand Timber Workers’ Conference, a resolution was passed urging the Government to appoint a competent person to inspect tram lines, bridges, skids n,nd! the stacking of timber at sawmills, in order to protect the lives of timber workers. “Jt was also resolved as follows: “That in order to cope with tlie everincreasing cost of living, tile Government be urged to nationalise as many of the Dominion’s industries as possible and to give effect to this, the Conference suggests that immedaitc steps be taken to nationalise the timber, shipping, and coal industries.” It was further resolved: “That the Government take, over accident insurance as a State monopoly and that all the employers bo compelled to insure their workers in the State Office.” PARLIAMENT TO MEET. WELLINGTON, June 27. By a proclamation to-night the meeting of Parliament is fixed for July 24th. APPEAL COURT. WELLINGTON, June 27. The Appeal Court to-ds»y heard llic ease of Craw v. Jardcn. ’1 his is an appeal from the decision of Mr Justice Herdman in an action in which appellant as plaintiff claimed the revision of a contract or, in the alternative, £2OO damages.
The matter concerned tlio sale of a trotting filly named “Marie Tempest.”
Plaintiff alleged that defendant fraudulently represented to plaintiff that the filly was eligible to start in the New Brighon Trotting Derby in about the month of May, 1919, whereas she was not eligible to run and had not been entered.
Judge TTerdmnn had held that plaintiff had not discharged the onus on Iter of establishing fraud and entered judgment for the defendant.
Mr Skerrett, K.C., and .Mr Fitzlierl,or( nnpeared for appellant and Mr (Ircsson for respondent. Court reserved its decision. A STIFF FINK. PALMERSTON NORTH, June 27. A dairyman, P. Kavagnah. of Tvniwnrnwara, was fined C-IO to-day for selling milk other than produced from a registered dairy. The Magistrate declared the state of affairs was almost, revolting and added there was direct evidence that a number of cases of en- ‘ terie bad been infected from tile dairy. Such a. place, be said, must be an absolute plague spot.
