Gentlemen, —I beg to report as follows : —^ For a considerable time past, complaints have boon made rc the state of the old Duke of Edinburgh section in Re veil Street. I have made several inspections, but could see nothing of an insanitary nature. However, I instructed the tenant to keep the place as clean as possible. This has been done to an extent, except for timber, firewood and other fuel which is heaped near the street. On the 13th. I served the agents, Messrs Duncan and Co. with a notice, drawing their attention to Section 22 of the Borough By-Law which deals with fencing of sections, etc. The agent informed me verbally that the matter was being dealt with. On the 25th. through a complaint to the Health Department, along with the loeal Health Inspector, I made a fur- j ther inspection but as before mention- ' ed, could find nothing insanitary. In fact the back promises of tile complainant were in a worse condition than the one complained of. Notice to rectify

was served, On Sunday the loth, I discovered that the gates on the Square in Stafford street had been removed, one was thrown in the Bcaley Street drain and the other was hidden behind the trees at the Eastern end of Stafford Street, j I replaced the gates and fixed spikes which may prohibit a recurrence of this act of vandalism. I found the privy on Cass Square to he in such a. filthy condition, that it •was impossible to gain access. The state of the concrete floor was indescribable. This I cleaned and tarred; I made and hung a door which I keep Locked except on occasions of gatherings on the Square. I wish to draw the Council’s attention to the way in which access is gained to the pavilion. On the occasion of any gathering being held, I always go along to open up, and on every occasion I find the place open, although I always securely lock it after use. I have been informed that small boys have no difficulty in climbing over the front and opening from the inside. The result is the pavilion is always in a mess with sods etc., and requires cleaning continually. I wish to report that on Saturday night last 37 of the street lamps were either blown out or blown back tlirougn the storm, a number of mantles and glasses being broken. I spent the most of Sunday in repairing etc:., winch I completed and had ready for Sunday night’s lighting. The rough sea on this occasion c«t through the vacant section at the end of Hampden Street and deposited a heap of drift wood etc., on to the eastern side of the road and footway. If this section were fenced, no doubt it would stop this, as it docs on each side.—Received. ; Mr Blank moved that a letter. bo written to the Sergeant of Police pointing out that acts of vandalism were continued to be carried out in the town and drawing attention to the shortage of police in Hokitika. Seconded by Mr King and carried. Air Blank drew attention to the fact that football had been played on Cass Square on Sundays, and be urged it should be stopped. After some discussion Air Blank moved (bat the Council take steps to have tlie playing of football on Cass Square on Sundays prevented in future. Seconded by Mr King. Air Warren moved an amcadmret that football be stopped during tire hours of church services. No seconder. The motion was then agreed

In connection with the pavilion Mr King moved that. the ()vrr:-rcr report on the host means of erecting lie'll! shutters to dose, in the front of the pavilion, and the cost (hereof. Seconded hy Mr Blank and carried. The Council rose at 8..30. p.m. ammmmmammmmmmmmamrnmsmi
