Mr. Phillip Gibbs writes.—Ou troops are engaged in heavy fightini on the whole front, northeast of Court rai to the south-east of Lo Cateau, i distance of more than 50 miles. Tin enemy are making desperate efforts t: hold the line of thtj Scheldt, southward! from Ghent, covering Tournai and Val leneiennos, but we arc getting closer tc the canal everywhere, and beyond it. Between Definin' and Le Cateau and eastward of Conrtrai, the Second Army advance was resumed tjiis morning steadily pushing 'towards the Scheldt canal,. taking many little Flemish villages (Still inhabited by civilians crouching in the cellars." I visited. Conrtrai this morning, but hero there was not a. wholly joyous entry like Lille and Bruges. There were thirty thousand people in Conrtrai, but they had suffered too much delay and were like people long stunned by misery. The Germans being unable to carry off the cloth weaving machinery, broke in into bits with hammers. The last commandant of Conrtrai was Richstoven, father of the famous airman. The city is now being shelled, compelling the people to return to their cellars.
