[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT. ‘ A DUNEDIN FIRE, DUNEDIN, Sept. .14. A policeman discovered a fire, in th© Otago Club at 3 a..m. on Saturday. He hurst in the front door and roused the inmates, numbering 10. The fire originated in the upper floor. It burnt through the roof, but the Brigade suppressed the lire in fifteen minutes. Considerable unavoidable damage was done by water and smoke probably amounting from £7OO to £IOOO. Jhe building was owned by the Standard Insurance Cov. 'llie club was insureii for £2OOO. DROWNING FATALITY.
WELLINGTON, This Day. David Sullivan, aged 27, was drowned at Happy Valley, yesterday, while l-fwiinmi.ng a horse in the surf. A strong wind and high tide made the sea rough. The man lost his balance, and being unable to swim clung to trie horse's head, so both the man and the animal were drowned. Sullivan’s bodv has not been recovered.
HON. G. W. RUSSELL AT WESTPORT. WESTPORT, Sep. ]A - Hon. 0. W. Russell, who arrived at Westport on Friday night, tame through the BuTier Gorge, and on the way examined a truck of coal on the roadside and entered the mine, which runs right off the road into the hillside. When interviewed, he expressed his approval of the completion of I»angahua railway, in which there is a gap of about 18 miles, so as to allow of the big field of coal in the Gorge to be utilised.
The Minister received a deputation from the hospital board regarding a children's ward and other requirements. Yesterday altcrnoon the Ministervisited Waimangaroa. where he received a deputation from the Miners’ Unions regarding various amendments to the mining acts. The Minister visited Tlenniston and inspected the hospital, and gave a brief open air address, at tile conclusion of which, on the call of Mr Helson, secretary of the Miners’ Union, he was given a round of cheers. In replying, Mr Russell expressed the pleasure the visit gave him and intimated lils intention to revisit Deimiston at an early date.
MOTOR OAR FATALITY. MASTER.TON, Sep. 14. .lack TTenrys, (injured in the recent, motor accident) was admitted to the Master ton Hospital, but- lie died late, on Friday. Mr C. Lamb, the other occupant,' was seriously injured, his arm being broken.
