SYDNEY, August 9. General Foch replying to the Commonwealth’s congratulations on recent successes, says: “I have no doubt that we shall secure a decisive victory.” j
BALFOUR REPLIES TO PROTESTS . LONDON, August 8. The Hon. A. J. Balfour replying c the protests against the Government's alleged failure, said that he would respond to the peace feelers and declare his views on the League of Nations. He said he was unable to see anything in the action, statements, and writings of the German Government, politicians of publicists affording the slightest hope for peace discussions to be fruitful now and an almost impossible abyss separated the Entente and the Central Powers unless the war results in changing the heart of Germany, or a complete Entente victory proves to Germany, the failure of her policy. Every sign indicated that Germany’s aid in the war was universal domination. There was a small hope that Germany would be a peaceful member of the League of Nations until such ideas were eradicated and the only way of eradicating them is to show the Germans that thev cannot succeed.
SWISS CELLULOISE COMPANY LONDON. August 8.
The report of the Select Committee of the Swiss Cclluloise Company wlitcn was registered as a British Company, reveals that thero has been no supervision of the Company, which was r'
relieved of taxation, and finally got the State to pay the capital and expenditure. They secured a monopoly of eelluloise, and acetate, the principal ingredients of varnish for aeroplane wings. They received a contract to the value of three million. The company’s capital was £IOO,OOO in sixpenny shares. (Subsequently the shareholders received l4}d in the £ for their shares for each sixpenny share. The chief shareholders are Doctor Dreyfus of Basle, Vickers Ltd, and the Plundenneal Trust, of Montreal.

Lord Reading has shown remarkable genius for the solution of the business problem, and was largely instrumental in the splendid success of the co-operation of the. British and American war efforts.
