The Committee met at 12.,'> p.m. at tlie County Cliambers. Present—Mesers 11. Norman (chairman), B. Ward, J. S. Lang, W. j. Butler, R. Honliston, J. J. McTntosh, G. A. Perry, and I). J. Evans (lion. sec.). Tlie minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence approved. The Chairman moved a motion of sympathy -with lion. see. in his recent bereavement, Mr Ward seconded. — Carried. JNW ARB COR R ESPONBENCE. From the Chairman, recommending application for short leave for a soldier who had the disposal of his farm to nttond to. Received and approved. The soldier wrote thanking the Committee for the action taken on his behalf. From H. P. Hurbnrv in reference to an appeal for a reservist, the Inst son on the farm, pointing out course to be ta ken.—R eeeived. From Commissioner Efficiency Board asking report on two appeals submitted through the Military Service Board. —Received and report sent approved. From same asking report in the case of a request for financial assistance.— Received ; the reply sent was approved. From same suggesting that, all recom- ; mendatiotis regarding appeals he sent direct though the Efficiency Commissioner.—Received and agreed to. From same reminding Committee that tlie time had arrived when every single man fit for military service kept hack for any reason meant that a married man must go on active service in his sfead.—Received. From same enquiring for farm employ meats lor a returned soldier, formerly a sheet metal worker. —Received, i From same forwarding extracts from a report by the British Beveloprnent Commissioner regarding agricultural research in Great Britain.—Received. From same regarding national food supply at Home and stating the deductions favored “baby beef” and the killing of other animals Young. —Received.

From same forwarding copies of hand book for reservists, list of camp deserters, and particulars of settlement of returned soldiers on the land.—Received. From same stating the time had arrived when the country must consider the claims of returned soldiers to so-

euro adequate means of peaceful occupation.—Received. The meeting dis- , cussed the matter sympathetically, but regardod it as essential that the lead should com© from the Government. The difficulty was in finding congenial employment- for many of the men who re--1 turned broken in health. Fnrmjug life was not always acceptable ns a new beginning, but where it was the members of the local committee were disposed to do all in their power to give instruction to tho war desiring to follow such occupation. From same stating the Government were anxious to assist those settlers who were suffering by the recent heavy fall of snow, and suggesting that ail cases for assistance he notified at once to tho Department of Agriculture.— Received.

Tho Chairman’s action in applying for extended leave for a soldier past owner of a: sawmill, to enable a supply of timber to be cut was approved. The Committee rose at 1.40 p.m.
