A NOVEL METHOD.
TO RAISE FUNDS,
WELLINGTON, May 27. Final conditions have been agreed upon under which Auckland accepts the Wellington challenge to lay a “copper trail” on the main trunk line from one city to the other, a disance of 426 miles inland, for the Red Cross funds. Wellington has undertaken to lay pennies on one rail of line to Auckland, while Auckland is laying pennies to Wellington on the other rail. The amount the winner will require to lay is £93,657 10s. RELEASED. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Messrs J. Flood, E. Langley, and 11. Hunter, imprisoned in connection with tho sedition charges, were released today, as a result of the Cabinet decision. RETURNED SOLDIERS. AUCKLAND, May 26. The Returned Soldiers Association Conference opened at the Town Hall this morning. The delegated were wamly welcomed by the Major, (Mr Gunson). Major Boxer in his reply spoke principally on repatriation and the need of returned men, who are not adapted to settle on the land. RAILWAY ACCIDENT. DANNEVIRIvE, May 27. A fatality occurded at Dannevirke Railway Station at noon. An elderly man, Harry Austin, attempting to board the train to Wellington, fell under a carriage and died from the. injuries he received. Deceased, who was a widower, had no relatives in the Dominion.
