LATE LOCALS.
The local members of the railway staff met on Friday night at the Railway Station to say good-bye to Enginedriver A. Bennett, who has been transferred to Greymouth. Mr. Payne (Stationmaster) made feeling remarks to the departing officer. Although he had only been here himself a very short time he always found Mr Bennett a first class officer, who attended to his work faithfully. Mr Payne then presented Mr Bennett with a neat travelling bag. Mr. A. Rowe on behalf of Loco Department also spoke feelingly, and Messrs Callum and Private J. Fitzgerald of the Good’s Shed Department, spoke in regret at his departure. Mr F. Thompson, spoke on behalf of the carters, and Mr. A. E. Stapleton for tho business people. During the evening songs were sung by Messrs Hogan and Rowe. On Mr Bennett rising to respond, he was greeted with applause. He said he felt it very much having to leave Hokitika, bv<t hoped it would not be long before he was shifted back again. Cheers were then given for Mr and Mrs Bennett and family.
