MR P. G. WEBB, M.P.
THE SHADOW OF MILITARY SERVICE. WELLINGTON March 1. It is possible that the result of the Wellington North by-election may have some effect on the plans that Mr P. C. Webb, M. P., has had in mind for Iris future. If Mr Holland had been returned, the Socialists would have moved heaven and earth to get Air Webb exempted from military service. They would not have succeeded, but in their (attempts they would have made a lot of trouble for the Government, and probably also for the people of this country . \ The wisdom of the policy of the Government in refusing to give Mr Webb opposition when lie resigned the Grey, seat, and so denying him an opportunity to have a. contest on the issue of whether he should go to the war or not is now apparent. Mr Webb still says that he will not hold his seat and go to the war as well. This may mean that he will resign his seat for the second time and maneouvre again for a fight.
