FIE BCE C"( J’NTR OV E EtSY. SYDNEY February 0
There is an important controversy raging hero at the present time-on the question—ln the interest of Australia, and the Empire, which is tlie better thing to do, grow wheat or stock?
The facts have already, been published in New Zealand papers. Australia in the last four or live years, has produced enormous quantities of wheat, all of which lias been purchased by Britain Although ,as result of the. shipping shortage, the greater portion of his wheat is lying stored in Australia ,and it is reckoned that it will be five years before the last of it is shifted, the Australian farmers have been paid for most of the grain. Britain would not buy the 1017-18 crop however, and this is being carried by tlie Co ip n; o inveal tli. The farmers have been paid for this, too. Terrible stories reach the city persistently of havoc wrought among the mountains of stored wheat by mice, weevil and weather. It is believed that if, before shipping is available, destruction overtakes the grain, it will have a disastrous effect on Australian commerce and finance.
