GOALMINERS.
THE DEMAND FOR. INCREASED , WAGES. DUNEDIN, Fob. Pi:. The Federated Coal Miners of. the Dominion are demanding another substantial increase in the wages of all workers ill and about the coal mines of the Mine Owners’ Association. As fara.s conditions, “troubles” and wages are concerned, tlie position never was! better for the men. The labour eondi-1 tions in tho mines of tlie South Island ■ have not occasioned any trouble at all; as ’if matter of fact, the industrial relationship between the men and tlie employers is s moot.h. /As regards wages, the actual returns sh ow-'tha t the capable coal minor is probably the best paid skilled worker in the Dominion. Ex--pc.rt hewers earn considerably more than £1 per day. The average wagecounting in old men and youths, actually works out at from £4 5s to Co per week, holidays included. If tlie Government again insist upon tlie owners conceding the'Federation’s demands, tlie consumer will have to hear the burden. 'lt is suspected in some'quarters that the Federation’s demands are direcly associated with tlie movement for the. exemption of Mr. R. C. Webb, M. P. for Grey, from military service. . •
