RECENT FLOOD DAMAGE.

LIMITED GOVERNMENT AID. hungerforitF BRIDGE TO BE ABANDONED. The County Chairman (Mr B. Ward) is in receipt of the following letter from the Public Works Department relative to recent flood damage in Westland: — “lam directed by the Minister of Public Works to inform you that he has received a report from the Resident Engineer regarding the damage caused to roads and bridges in the Westland County by the recent flood, and is prepared to grant assistance to your Council to the extent of (£r for £i) for the construction of a new bridge over the Waimea Creek on the old Christchurch main road, and £SO (£1 for for the repair of the protective works and reconstruction of a groyne on the Lake Kanieri road. It is to be understood, of course, that proposals are to be submitted to and approved by the District Engineer in both cases before operations are commenced. “ An expenditure of would be recpiired in order to repair Hungerford’s bridge and to protect the road in the vicinity from damage by the Kawliaka Creek, but as an alternative route via Malfrov’s bridge and Spencer Road can be provided- for the sum of £2OO, if is proposed to abandon Hungerford’s bridge and repair Spencer road and the approaches to Malfroy’s bridge. An authority for is being issued to the Resident Engineer who will have the work commenced as soon as-practicable. “ The Resident Engineer has sufficient balances on his ordinary maintenance authorities to repair the damage caused to other roads' and bridges under the control of the Department.”
