VALUABLE RACEHORSE’S DEATH.

THE EFFICIENCY BOARD. HASTINGS, Aug. 24. In reply to Hastings Chamber of Commerce urging the retention of the services of the Efficiency Board, Sir James Allen says:-—“No effort on my part will be spared to keep the National Efficiency Board in existence; Valuable work has already been done and much more is to be done.” Nauttca rcourt judgment. WANGANUI, Aug. 23. The Nautical Court inquiry into the loss of the lighter Dorset, off Kaiawi beach on August 2nd gave its reserved decision to-day. The Court found the accident was not contributed to by the neglect of the Harbour officials, nor of any defect of the port, having regard to the proved depth of water. The Court was unable to say what object the vessel struck. The master of the lighter, Shamrock, Captain James Irvine oemmitted a grave error, of judgment in not going to the assist- I anco of the Dorset when returning to port and there was an unaccountable' delay in the lighter Thistle going to the Dorset’s assistance. Captain Ber-, tie of the Dorset was exonerated from blame. The Court made nq recommendation a s to costs. |

EXAMINATION OF REJECTS. WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. j It is officially announced that the re-examination of rejects will bo commenced at Auckland on September 3. Such men as are passed will go into special camps at Featliorston and then to drafts for-the Front. Other military districts will bo taken in rotation. Only those will be re-examined whose papers do not disTlose any vital defects. , Training at this camp will aim at the creation of physically fit men, Inbuilding up their physique. The first draft is expected to arrive on September 26th. All tho men will enter camp on the same footing.
