reeded him. Though tbo crisis is ostensibly due to electoral reform, the dispute is really attributable to a vital difference of opinion on peace and war. M. Esterhazy vainly tried to reconcile the views of the Karolys and Tisza sections. The latter demanded a vigorous prosecution for tho war while the former favoured an early peace by compromise rapprochment with England and internal democratisation.

Af. Esterhazy sought a third course by promising autonomy to the subject nationalities in the Kingdom.
