(Received This Day at 12.25. p.m.) LONDON August 20. The situation on the Russian and Roumanian fronts is generally satisfactory. The Germans at present are j not making serious progress at Poldolia | and Bessarabia, while the magnificent I resistance of the Russo-Roumnninns is holding tho enemy in Moldavia. The Austro-Gormans have not yet reached Ocna, and have not progressed much down Trotus valley. A severe struggle is progressing further south, in the neighbourhood of the Sereth. Mr. Wilson reviewing tho Russian situation says the sobering influence of the rebellion and military catastrophe has already dissipated. The political parties were shouting tlieir rival ' programmes. The prospects of an agreement at tho Moscow Conference is not bright. General Korniloff has demanded full control of railways.

GRAVE DANGER
(Received This Dav at 12.25. p.m.) LONDON August 20. Gnecral Korniloff’3 confidential report states he is able to rally the fleeing armies, by prompt, stern measures hut the drafts arriving from the rear to fill the heavy losses by desertion nro utterly unfitted, owing to the oomplete absence of discipline and training. The railways are disordered and their recent defeats have, brought imminent peril in the faco of tho great enemy forces. There have been 150 Jews promoted to be lieutenants. RUSSIA’S ATTITUDE. ' (Received this day at 1.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug 20. The Russian Embassy has issued the following statement. —“The Russian Government has not yet formulated an answer to the Vatican’s peace proposal, but there Is a feeling in Russia that the proposal was made with some inspiration from the Central Powers. It is considered in Russia that every basis of the Vatican’s proposal is inconsistent with the democratic aims of tho Russian people in this war, and is not acceptable from ’ that point of view.”

The Commander of tho Tenth Army states tho rumour of a threatened German offensive in Riga was spread hv German agents. Tho bulk of tho enemv artillery is in Roumania, making a Riga offensive impossible.
