THE TENTH BALLOT

AVELLTNGTON. Aug. 16

Voluntary recruiting for the 34th and 35th Reinforcements will be closed down on Saturday, and a ballot will be taken from among the remaining members of the First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve next .week, to fill up such vacancies, as exist. As no ballot was taken last month, and two drafts require to be filled, the ballot will be a double one, and it js expected that between 14,000 and 15,000 men will be called up under it. This will leave some 7000 men still in the First Division who will also bo called up by ballot a month later. The taking of the tenth ballot will probably bo commenced on Tuesday next.

SPECIAL TRAINING CAMP

WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. / Enquiries _ made in official quarters has elicited the statement that it is intended to establish n camp for Cl men; that is to say, men who could ho made fit for active service after undergoing special training. Numbers for tho men now classified C2 will in all probability on re-examination be classified Cl. It is not intended to take into camp all home service men, but only those who are likely to be made fit for foreign service by a special course of training. THAMES DROWNING CASE. CHILDREN NOT FOUND GUILTY. AUCKLAND, August 17. Two boys, Claude Gibbons aged seven years and four days and Richard Rehara, aged eight years and nine months, came up for trial on a charge of manslaughter atthe Supreme Court to-day before the Chief Justice. Hie charge was brought ip connection with the death of a girl aged six, who was found drowned in a creek at Kirikiri nar Thames, on June 19th. After a short retirement the jury found a verdict of not guilty, and accused were discharged.
