MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.
MONDAY, JULY 16th, 1917.. A sitting of the above Board was held this morning at 10 o’clock. Present Messrs J. S. Evans, S.M., (chairman), J. D. Milton, and 11. E. Robbins j Mr A. W. Duncan (Secretary) and Captain Pilkington, (the military representative, were also in attendance The following appeals were dealt with: "William Richard Close, Hokitika, C2, —Adjourned sine die. Charles Olderog, appellant stated lie was single, 28, a buslnnan at Te Kinga; He had enlisted with tho 22nd Reinforcements, but owing to his father being an alien, he was turned down- For that reason, he objected to going. The appeal was disallowed. The chairman stated that representations would _be made to the Defence Department, so that he would bo notified whether he would be taken in the August draft or not* ' Patrick Sarsfield Heslan r Kokatahi, (Mr Wells): Captain Pilkington stated he made enquiries and had learned 1 that the appellant belonged to th© 14th Mounted Rifles and had been posted as a deserter. The appcallant has had indefinite leave. The chairman stated that although the Camp Adjutant at Featherston ■stated the appellant as ft deserter, lie was really a soldier on indefinite leave. ' Mr Wells handed in a statement of his position. The appellant stated he was a farmer single, and 29 years of age. He liad one brother who had been rejected. His mother was dependent on him. He had enlisted) at the beginning of 1916; lie was granted indefinite leave owing to his brother refusing to work the farm. He stated he was quite prepared to go if he was given financial assistance. Adjourned for further enquiries, i*. chairman stated that the 'Board has ... power, as he was a soldier on leav©. Edward Thomas Groufsky: the financial assistance offered by the Government was stated by the chairman, and appelant sqid it was sufficient, and he was willing to go with tho August draft. William Brown (Mr Murdoch) .—Adjourned until next sitting. Edward A. Simpson, Ross,. C2.—-Ad-journed sine die. John Collett (Mr Sellers).—The an-’ pellant wired stating at was impossible to attend, as he was managing two farms at Rotokino- Adjourned for further enquiry. Malcolm Henry Wallace (Mr Murdoch.—Mr. Murdoch stated that th© appellant’s brother, who had returned from the front, declined to take charge of the factory. Robert Rouse, secretary of the Kumnra Dairy Coy., had 1 written to appellant’s brother asking liim to take over appellant’s duties. —Adjourned sine die. John Manera. Adjourned sine die.
