THE WAIPAWA PETITION

DANNEVIRKE. June 27

An early closing petition, with 1962 names of electors of Wajpawa electorate, was presented to Mr G. Hunter, M.P.,, who pledged himself to do all he could to secure six o’clock closing, and if that were not possible of achievement, he would endeavour to secure the largest possible curtailment of existing hotel hours.

The cutting out off the spring meeting nrovides for two days which the Cl”' has to lose, and a third day will come off the summer meeting.

In reference t° a case wired on /I uesday of two men charged with attempting to leave New Zea’lnd without passports, involving the attempted bribery of a Customs officer, the Collector of Customs wishes it to be made quite clear that although the Customs officer and the ship’s officer were actually paid the various amounts mentioned, these amounts were only received after consultation with him, and that the information received by the Police was supplied by the Customs officer prior to the money etc., being paid.
