As a result of continuous rain on Saturday and Sunday, there are heavy floods in various parts of SontbUnd. Washouts occurred •- on J alt the branch lines and traffic is practically suspended. The rain has now ceased. It will probably take a week to restore the
damage. A large area was nnder water, He leaves a widow and six eh'ldren. Ihe Flood at Gore Gore, May 28 Owing to heavy rains up country tbe Mataura river has bean rising steadily for the last 14 hours. At 1J a.m. to-day the flood waters appeared not to have yet reached the maximum. The damage in the town is considerable, .particularly in the lowest quarters, where the houses and shops on the west sjde were all submerged. There is almost a foot of water in the streets. It is believed that the farmers, owfng to the flood being sloioit entirely unexpected, have loit considerable stocks- Little more than one inch of rain fell at Gore on Sat u; day and Sunday, Up country reports indicate that the rivers are falling.
The Ferry Service. Wellington May 28 The Acting Postmaster General h»B announced that tbe Department has arranged with tbe Union Ooy for the Maori not to leave Lyttelton on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday for Wellington until after the arrival of tfie 6.55 p.m. train from Christchurch, tbts avoiding an overnight at Christchurch for mails and passengers from the West Coasl, for the North Island.
EXPLOSION ON TE ANAU, Three Men Injured. Napier, May 28 As the result of an explosion and fire in the Te Anau in the stream early this morning, three seamen were admitted to tbe hospital, one being seriously, and two, badly burned. There is no structural damage to tbe Bbip. A Boy Killed. New Plymouth, May 28 James Wright, aged eight, was killed by falling from the bridge of the dredge Paritu to the deck.
