SOCCER NOTES.

The local senior. team had to journey i "into the city to play their game against Island Bay. For the first time- this season they played on Anderson Park and although fche ground was very heavy and slippery they played a very pretty game. They seemed to have benefited by the lesson the Thristles gave them the previous week, for although they were minus two of their Tegular players —Webster and Gardiner—they were aible to secure an easy win, the score being Hutt. 5, Island Bay 3. The teams were:— Hutt: Bird, McDougall, Chapman, Barrett, Lands; Stubbs, Nicolle, Jessop, Brown, Crundwell, Batclielor. Island Bayr Restieaux, ETerr, Wheeler, TrickcT, Thomas, Corrin, Beader, Mason, Moag, E-awlmgs and Hepburn. McDougall won the toss and Brown set the ball in motion, and before many minutes Nicolle opened the scoring for the Hutt. Prom tho kick off Island Bay managed to get the ball down to, Hutt's end of the filed,. but Chapnialr intervened . and beating a couple of players sent through .to Brown who shot,, the ball hitting the cross bar and going to the back of the net, thus making t-he score two. Hutt were playing well and' Jessop gave a good pass to Batchelor who forced a corner; this he placed well but Island Bay cleared and carried play to the Other end of the field where Moag put past. The Hut't secured two corners, first on the right

and one on the left, and from the latter Crundwell secured the Hutt's third goal. Jessop and Nicolle were playing well together and McDougall was feeding this wing well with good passes, and from one of these good passing movements, Nicolle siiot hard and the iball as deflected by one of the Bay ibaclcs through his own goal, thus shaking the score 4. Keeping the pressure up the Hutt secured its fifth goal when Crundwell shot and the Bay goalie saved, but he dallied with the ball to long and Brown, rushing in, put through; Island Bay then took a irand at attacking and* forced McDougall to concede a corner, this was well placed by Hepburn and Chapman put through hia own goal, thai s opening the account for Island Bay. The game got a bit willing and Hutt were kept defending, but another eoTner to Hepburn saw that player score a beautiful goal, direct from the kick. At this stage the referee cautioned one of the Bay players and it had the desired effect, for too much talking was taking place. Hutt then carried the play to the other end of the field and Nicolle secured a couple of corners, the second one going past. From a, free kick taken by Nicolle, Cru'ndwell put over the bar, and thus half time sounded with the score reading Hutt 5, Island Bay 2. ,

The second half was a game of missed chances as far as the Hutt -were concerned. They had three clear goals but three different foirwards when right in the goal mouth 'lifted the .ball over the bar.. The only goal scorecl in the second half was secured by the Bay and this was from a' good piece of work by their left wing; these were their two "star" men. Hepburn started the movement and Rawlings finished it off with a real good shot, which gave Bird no chance. Apart vfrom. the two players mentioned, the others in the team were very ordinary. Bird in goal had no chance with the three that did go past him. Chapman and MeDougall played well as full backs. The halves were also up to standard; it is one of the best games I have seen Stubbs play. Nicolle and Jessop *played well and it. was also ..one of Niepll.e's best games for some time, and they played as if they had some understanding. Brown, Crundwell and Batchelor completed a good forward line. If this line was

/pd by the -halves as they should be.

and in turn passed to each other and parted with the ball quicker and oftener, they would be second to none in tlieif division.
