HUTT VALLEY HOCKEY CLUB

•^ (By "Full Back.")

SENIOR A G-RADE

The local men went down to Wesley to th© tune of one goal to nil after a hard fought game from start to finish. Hutt were without the services-- of R Lusty who was on the sick !list, and E. MeLeod who was not up to usual; suffering from the effects of influenza, making a fairly weak team fielded for the game. Tihe game, however, was not without its exciting incidents j fast play was more or less manned 'by the sogginess of the ground. . Half time sounded with no score on either side. Both •teams on resumption striyed hard for the odd goal to win, and Wesley were i rewarded well on in the spell, making th score Wesley 1, Hutt nil. The" Hutt forwards strove hard to equalise but Wesleys' defence was sound. • SENIOR B. Tdie Senior B (A Team) were 'defeatled by Wesley on Karorai No. 3, by two ' goals to one. The game started at a ! good pace, Hutt taking play into Wesley territory where it remained for the t greater .portion of the spell. Wesley 'broke through occasionally and from one of these thrusts were successful in j netting from a penalty corner. Wesley"' !1, Hutt 0. The second spell was fairly even. Stoupe opened Hutt's account; making both teams eqtfaU. A feiw minutes before time Wesley obtained : another. goal and the final score was I Wesley 2, ,Hutt 1. If the full backs — Boss and.Gray—&&d played to the ! whistle, Wesley -would not have won. i The extra full back/ Cdelland, had moved up-field, thereby putting the opipos*

ing forwards off-sidej in addition the ball was kicked about ten yards. The backs hesitated, expecting a free 'hit to be gratned, but it was not, and before they realised the free <hit was not forthcoming, the ball had been- netted. Moral: always play until the whistle •blows. 'Simeon -at right half was inclined to play too far back. At the •beginning of the season the forward line was a good combination, but during the ,past few weeks it has develope dinto a set of individualists'; this is particularly noticeable on the left. Matthews on tlie left took the ball too close to the line, at times having to hit back, so that. the ' other _ forwards found it impossible to •get to the ball in time to use it profitaibly. Judd was on the sick list and was replaced by Hodgkinson, who did as well as could ibe expected as it was his first appearance this season. Atkins was tried at inside right for the greater part of the game. He did not appear to be inter* ested in the play while in that position, but brightened up considejably when Teturned to his usual position at centre. Stoupe playetl well, botii at centre and inside right.' Meet on the right, who was suffering from injuries, did all that was asked of him. Until the forwards- get back the combination they had at the'beginning of the season, the team can expect to go down each week. Maitland was the pick of the halves on Saturday, Levy was inclined to wander. Clelland at extra full back played too close to the. halves at times. Boss at left full back was badly "beaten by one of the Wesiley forwards towaTds the close of the game. .The Wesley full (backs and the goalie were solid through out. . The Senior B (B Teim) met Petone. on the Petone Recreation GrouTid arid were defeated by 2 goals to 1. JI^NTOK v. HUIA A. Hutt defeated "Huia A- on the Hutt ! Recreation Ground No. 1, by 4 to'S. j The scorers for <Hutt were L. Bennett, J. Caughley. W. Haigh, and Inness, The game vvits of a very ragged nature and Huia often caught the Hutt backs napping; Hutt had far more opportunities than Huia but they did not seem to be able to make the most of them. •The goal .shot) ting of the Hutt foi"war^ls was poor' 'The Hutt half-backs played well but the left full back was lat^ex err&ctic in his play. - TH;IRI>S v. VARSITY A. 1 Playing o n the Hutt Recreation Ground No. 2, Hutt were defeated lay Varsity Ahy4to 1. McOonald scored Hutt Js only goal. The Thirds pilayed their best game to date, the backs playing"'well;
