HUTT VALLEY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The 28th annual meeting of t&e Hutt Valley Horticultural Society.was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday, 24th Juac,"Mr. D. S. Patrick pre« siding over one of the largest meetings of the kind the society had teld for many years. The tables were nicelydecorated with flowers by the da dies who displayed particular interest in the social side of the meeting. . "A letter was received from Their Excellencies regretting t-lieir inability to attend the Spring Show and asking that the invitation be Ten wed at a later date. The National Daffodil Society wrote setting out the conditions upon which it was proposed to amalgamate with the Hutt Society at the Spring Sliow. The matter was referred to the incoming committee. The Director of Parks and Reserves, Wellington, wrote inviting the Society to combine-, with the Wellington Horticultural Society in the arrangements for running a HoTticultural AVeek in Wellington duTing January next. The matter was referred to t>lie incoming committee to deal with... ■ In moving the adoption of the annual report (which, was adopted) the president congratulated the society on its .financial position and acknowledged the splendid support given 'by the ladies during the year. He also spoke of t-he good work of the secretary, Mr. A. J. Nichalls, ai?d said that his energy made the work of the president light. Speak" ing of the work of the committee iie. said he greatly appreciated the "amount of work done by each member.' It is a wonderful band of workers. They are doing something for the betterment of the-district and -he. did appreciate their effo.rts. The Society was looking forward to •having the North Island Daffodil Cham-^. pionship allotted to them at the Spring Show w&ici. would probably be one of the finest exhibitions ever held in this. couHtry. It would probably be necessary to use the two halls to accommodate the exhibits. The decorative sections iad given enormously and the society was anxious to retain it. . In moving the adoption^ of the balance sheet Mr H. J. Poole said that he considered the financial position was most satisfactory. He considered the Society was second to none in Ne<w Zealand ~~ and this success was very largely due to the excellent work of the ladies' committee. Although, the Society only claimed to be -28 years old he had records in his possession which estalbdished the fact that shows were being iheld in the Hutt Valley as far back as 1844 ~ The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron and Patroness: Their Excellencies Loxd and Lady Bledialoe; President, Mr. D. S. Patrick; - Vice-Pre- ■ sidents: Same as last year excepting those who had left the district and with the addition of Messrs W. Nash M.P., A. T. Duncan, H. F. Johnston, It&dy Roberts, Mesdaines Mactfrfohy Beid, Ashley Duncan, and H. W. Kersley. Ladies Committee: Same as last year and Mesdames W. H. Wilson, Whitcher, A. G. Earle and the- Misses Anstis, Jameson, Woodhouse, 'G. BE. Savage. General Committee: Re-elected with addition of Messrs J. Thomson aenr and junr., J. Bertram, A. C. Hobbs, J. Foster, Pilcher junr., W. H. Barker, W. H. Vickery. Secretary Mr. A. J, Nicholls; Hon. Treasurer, Mr. H. J. Poole, F.R.H.S.;' Hon. Auditor, Mr W. G. Alexander. On the motion of Mr. A. Anderson it was decided to revise the rules and print them in this year's schedule. A vote of thanks to the retiring hon. auditor, Mr. W. B. Nicholson, for services rendered was passed. A number of new members were elected. . -• The main business being concluded, the ladies unders Mrs. D. S. Patrick, served delightful refreshments and received the hearty thanks of all present. A vote of thanks to the ladies and to the chair concluded the meeting.
