Sir, —On the occasion of the Girl Guides' Fete in Wellington some weeks ago, I and others entered a WartierDob train at v .Lambton to return ihome. Tihtf carriage (second class) was in STxeh. a filthy condition of grime afnd dust that ■we had to get a newspaper to clean suffifciemt space for us to sit on. I w.rate a protest on a suggestion form

and the other passengers signed it. I have to-day received the enclosed reply whie&i I would be glad if you can find space to publish, as I do.not know Hh» names and addresses of all the othefr paisfcengers who signed so cannot s-end them a copy. As they went on to Wa'ite-rToo and Woburn I presume they are residents t-hefe, so will get a copy of the "Hutt News" and see the Railway Department's reply, for which, of course, I am sending a letter of thanks.

—I am etc.,

Sir,—l noticed in your issue of Ist' May a letter from "Consistent" in. •which he takes Mr. Chapman to task fox having at one time expressed the opinion t>hat spen'dm^ money on. beautifying is not t?h© function -of the River Board and at a later period of having propounded a scheme for tree planting on Gear -

"Consistent" is unfortunate in Ms illustrsufciOn as the feoarcl is specially empdwered by a "Local i\.ot to plant the island with trees, s&Tubs, ,ot hedges:

"Wiihale writing on the subject' of Gtear Island I hope that your editorial drawing' attention-to the island as being a suitable site for the Centennial Exhibition will receive serious eonsider&r tion from tie sub-eonirnittee appointed to furnish a' report.-—I. am etc., -
