WOMAN CLERK'S THEFT.
LAX BUSINESS METHODS
Pauline Kulick, 23 head clerk at the Brisbane Supply Co., was charged before Mr Justice Maerossan with stealing £921 between July 1929 and January 1930. .
Evidence showed that the company conducted a cash order business and accused had full control of cash transactions being required to accept money from collectors and over the counter and enter up the books.
Accused pleaded not guilty.
The Judge commented: somewhat strong ly on the auditing of the company's books. He said it seemed to him that
some auditors did not do the work for which they were paid. ;
The jury returned a verdict of guilty with a strong- recommendation to 'mercy on the ground of the lax business method of the firm and the great responsibility placed on accused without proper supervision.
The Crown Prosecutor said that gay living was the only explanation of the manner in. which the money was spent.
His Honour said the case would not allow > him to extend the benefits of the First Offender-s Act. He sentenced the girl to tweleve months' hard labour,.but stated that if restitution was niatie he would recommend the prisoner's release
on bond
