HUTT RIVER BOARD
i The regular meeting of the Hutt River Board was held on Tuesday evening, there being present Mr. F. S. Hewex (chairman), -and Messrs G. A. Chapman, H, E. Leighton, C. Gostelow and 3. Mitchell. The engineer was also present. " .- Ai/ application from King GeorgeTheatre for peritiission to /erect advertising sign at approac-h. to tho new bridge was. declined on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Goste.low.,.. ■ '•; . . •" : - '-'••■■- A Tetter, was received from the Waiwetu. Progressive Association, agreeing to the Board's request that the members should use their -efforts to prevent polution of the Awanmtu Creek.
Messrs Bertih, Levy and Go were granted-a 2 years' lease of tEeir factory site on Gear Island conditional on certain irapToveinents being effected which would minimise the smell nuisance.
Messrs Oppenheimer and Go reported that in consideration of representations made by the Board, considerable im-
proyements had been carried out in otder to overcome the'smell nuisance. -
'Tn regard i to the complaint from residents of Malone Road, the borough engineer replied.ppinting. out that a lifting station was being ibuilt and would ovcTe'oiue the nuisancer . ' '
It was agreed to offer the lease of a horse padlock to *the Lower Hutt Borough Council at £15 per annum for two years. ,' - ■
, Residents of Wyn.dr'uni wrote complaining that certain creek cleaning woTk had not been done jto their entire satisfaction. > " ■
Tiie engineer reported-, fully on the eontraot and considered that'the contractors had carried out the" work in a very satisfactory manner and did not recommend that thfey be asked to' do any nxore, work under the contract. '
■Mr. Chapman maintained that the Board was following a dangerous policy in assisting witth. beairtification of ,the •banks. The ratepayers of WyndTuia had already received more benefit than they would pay in rates for five years; It was a <rsprat to catch a mackrell.' l
* The chairman said the policy was one ©f helping those who wove willing to help themselves-. . : -
In reply to Mr. Gostelow the engineer said he was perfectly satisfied that the'property/owners had received, .more benefit than t&ey had actually paid fo^,
It was agreed to leave • the matter with the chairman until next "meeting
E«ferring to the suggestion from Mr Candy and residents on the banks of the Waiwetu Stream that the Board should use a suction, dredge for creek eleaningi ' After hearing the engineer^ report on the matter^ on the motion, of the chairman it was decided to ad-_ \dse Mr Candy that at the present time the Board could not see its way to' purchase a Iraetidn dredge, but would do its best to ■keep tihe creek free of
weeds.
Tti was 'estimated by the engineer that a suitable suction dredge far the work would'cost £3000 and^in reply to a question from Mr. Gostelbw he said .the same dredge woB!ld not lse suitable for assisting with the reclamation dt the Estuary. '
