HUTT y. BEO6IiLYN.
This game was played on the Hutt Recreation Ground under very' unfavourable conditions. The ground, which was used "by one of the Lower Grades previous'to the senior game, resembled a quadmiTe. Both teams took the field in a drivinw rain. Brooklyn won the toss and elected to play with the wind and were soon down at the Hutt goal, but poox shooting spoiled good opportunities. Play was very scrappy until McDougal, Hutt 's centre half, secured the ball and quickly passed to Nicol who after beating the Brooklyn left back, eeritred nicely to Lowry, who send in a terrific left drive which the. goalie stopped in great style but could not hold. -The ball rebounded and MePhee, Tunning up, sent in a beautiful shot giving the goalie no chance w&atever. Hutt 1, Brooklyn 0. Brooklyn now took a turn at attacking and their 'centre forward sent in a hard dTive which Webster, cleared in masterly fashion. At this stage of the game "Hutt's defence was. showing up brilliantly. Chapman and Gardiner defending in good style while M'cl>ougal, who is a pillar of strength to his side, was veTy ably supported by Newlyns and Barrett. Later on Nicol received' the ball and beat two players, but was foiled. Hutt was awarded a penalty. Nicol taking the kick, hex gave the goalie no chance. A few minutes later half times was called and without the customary spell play was resumed. After a deal of mid-field play, BatcheloT secured possesion and passed to Crundwell who transferred to Lowry, the latter beating two opponents and sending in a great shot which t«he goalie miss•ed. At this stage of the game the rain was coming down in torrents, and after * a brief consultation between the two captains and/the referee, the Brooklyn captain decided to forfeit the game.
It would be: very unfair to criticise any of the players, as the elements were all against good football. 3Ttar Brooklyn P, Hanson, Anton, Browning and their goal-keepeT were outstanding. Webster in goal for Hutt played a sound game. Chapman and G-ardiner at full, were very reliable. Tike halfback line worked very hardi McDougal was not deterred by the mud and put in some strenuous woxk. Batchelor and Crundwell played sound football. Crundwell, although a clever player, is inclined to hang on too long. McPhee who had his jaw broken at ■ the beginning of the season, is back to &is old form again and puts plenty of vigour and dash into his work. Lowry and Nicol on the right wing combine well.
