SATURDAY "A RACE FOB LIFE" "A Race for Life" a Warner Bros, production starring Rin-Ti^-Tjin. wiJLI be screened at the King George Theatre on Saturday. This is the Wonder Dog's fourteenth screen truimph and it is acclaimed as the most thrilling of the lot which is saying a great deal . "A Race for Life" recounts the adventures of Danny O'Shea, who goes with his dog to the Southland, via box car route, there to become a jockey for a turfman who has enemies who try to poison the horse, and succeed in imprisoning Rinty. The uncanny intelligence which the dog shows in. extricating himself from all his troubles and in spurring his pal to victory provides a story which will make the house rock with cheers. The human cast consists of Virginia Brown Faire, Carrol Nye, Bobby Gordon, James Mason and Pat Hartigan. Charles R. Condon wrote the story and scenario and the production was directed by Ross Lederman who was so successful in his direction of Rin-Tin-Tin in "A Dog of the Regiment." JAZZ MAD" Romance and good acting featured the presentation of "Jazz Mad" also on the same programme. Marion Nixon and George Lewis. provide the romance and Hersholt the acting. The picture can be ranked among the best that have been shown here this year. It has everything to please an audience. Human interest abounds in the story of the old musician whose great symphony won't sell and who has to earn a living by playing in a comedy jazz band. Tearful scenes and mirthful ones occur in the right places. The resulting impression upon the audience is highly pleasing and it will go home calling "Jazz Mad" an excellent production.

Hersholt add* to his reputation as one of the screens greatest character actors by; doing, a tremendous portrayal as Franz Hausman, the musician. 'His genius for acting is fully shown. Miss Nixon and George Lewis who is starred in the "Collegians" series, also display great ability. The dramatic scenes in .the _huge amphitheatre w-here the climax takes place pre tensely thrilling and are not overdone as are so many big picture spectacles. They fit in with the story. The Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra and Alfred Hertz, famous conductor took part in this aequenee. MONDAY AND TUESDAY "ACROSS TO SINGAPORE" The unfathomable lure of the sea forms the background for an amazing drama of love, hate and adventure in "Across to Singapore" Ramon Novarro 's new starring vehicle. Never has the star of "Ben Hur" been seen to better advantage. As the youngest of four sea-faring brothers, Novarro encounters terrific storms, imprisonment, mutiny, hand to hand encounters and thrilling adventures in a quest that takes him across the Pacific to Singapore and back again. Joan Crawford, opposite Novarro again demonstrates that she is worthy of stellar honours. Ernest Torrence in the role of Novarro 's eldest brother, contributes a compelling characterisation and James Mason as the scheming first mate is also worthy of special mention. Anna May Wong, Edward Connelly, Frank Currier, Dan Wolheim, nd Duke Mrtin comprise the remainder of the cast.

R. Sheehan general manager. This place of honour leading off the new season's schedule was given to "The Loves of Carmen" because it is considered one of the strongest pictures on the Fox list. Miss Del Rio's Spanish heritage and her temperament enabled her to give a most artistic portrayal of the fiery Carmen. With the same slrill shown in his interpretation of Captain Flagg in "What Price Glory" MeLaglen played the Tole of Eseamille the rugged bullfighter, with convincing realism. The part of Don Jose was assigned to Don Alvarado, himself a Spaniard. "LOVE AND LEARN" Esther Ralston one of the most bewitching blondes of the screen, and who has been seen in "Ten Modern Commandments" ancl "The Spotlight" is to be seen in the newest Paramount j picture.
