MOERA COMMUNITY SPORTS AND RATEPAYERS' LEAGUE.
The fortnightly meeting: of the above; League was held in the Community; Hall, Moera on August 2nd.,.Mr. C. M. Groom-presiding. . ; v A notification was received from the Railway Department. with reference to the, application for a proposed overhead bridge from Awamutu to Randwiek Road shopping area. The Department definitely declined tp undertake to build the bridge and referred the League to the Borough Council. The JtJorough Council has notified the League that York £nd Elizabeth street roading will be put in order. A letter' of thanks was dispatched to the town clerk. A letter. was sent to Mr. W. T>Strand requesting data concerning the Holly Tree Commemoration of the eight hour day. This tree is situated on the Stop-bank at} the rear of the Moera children's play area. An offer from the: Petone Benefit Entertainers to run a social in aid of the League's funds was accepted with thanks, and the event will take place at the Moera Community Hall -in the middle of August. A repeat application has been .made, to the P. and T. Department regarding the public telephone box- within the area. We trust that this application will meet with success. Letters were sent to the Premier (Hon. J. G. Coates), and to Mr. Sidey, indicating that our members strongly support the daylight saving measure: Replies were received that indicated our support was recorded. The League has decided to open a boxing school gymnasium at the new Community Hall within avfew weeks. Boys of the district will greatly benefit by this departure. Mr. Henry Hansen, an experienced member of the committee, will be in sole charge. A most successful plain' and fancy dress dance was held at the new Community Hall on Saturday, July 28th. The .new buildng was opened and approxmatoly 300 persons attended, Mr. Jack Pekford actng as M.C. The patrons fully apprecated the -first-class dance floor, comfortable seatng ~aeeommodaton, lghtng" arrangements and the abundant ventlaton. Many were in fancy costume and; the judges found difficulty in their decision. Mr. A. Gardner was awarded the gentleman's first prize and Miss Sutheduand' the ladies' prize. The judges for the fancy dress were Mr. and Mrs. Blake, and Mr. J. Campbell, the-Lower Hutt Borough councillor. Mr. A. Grierson (councillor) was also present. Owing to previous engagement Miss Margaret O'Connor was not able to be present, but very kindly sent along four very accomplished pupils who gave an interesting exhibition of the popular dance, the Yale Blues. Miss Gladys Smyth, that very talented fancy dancer, gave a wonderful exhibition of toe and fancy dancing. This young lady wilj obtain many . pupils at the new hall where she is teaching fancy dancing. Many prizes were distributed during the evening by the M.C. These dances, which will appeal to all lovers of dancing-, will be continued every alternate Saturday from the above date. An energetic League social committee has determined to make these evenings the most enjoyable in the district and extends a hearty welcome to all to attend.
