Notes.
Following a meeting of the Intermediate and Third Grade teams on Monday last, it was decided to withdraw the Intermediate team. The majority of the players in this team have signified their willingness to play for the other teams. Unfortunately the decision of some members was not known early enough; consequently the Third Grade team! was defaulted. However, this team will no doubt take the field this week. Those who desire to play are asked to attend the gymnasium on Thursday night, if they hav.e^ not already done so during the week.
The Junior B's had only five of tEeir original team on Saturday, the balance being Third and Intermediate players, which accounts for their big defeat. The following players are standing out through injuries which will serve to show how the shortage of player has arisen :- —Berntsen, Gibson, Peck, Daily, Frances (senior), Hester, Hanson, Gordon, Hoddinott, Hunt (junior). Hay has left the district, C. Slater is getting ready for opossum trapping whilst several players in the junior teams have not been attending the gymnasium and so have not been played. No doubt if the latter put in an appearance at the gymnasium this week they will be considered for selection, and we hope for the sake of the Junior B team, which needs strengthening, that these players will become keen-again.
E. Eea was selected .for the senior team this week, but very sportingly stood down to let Watts have a game. Ted is to be commended for his action, and we hope that it will be remembered in his favour when this week's team is being selected.
There is some doubt about. P. Byrne being available this week. We hope, however, that the obstacle in the way of his appearance may be surmounted, us his presence gives the rest of the backs confidence.
All sports Will regret to learn that Williams, the ex-Otago rep, had to go south again last week owing to the death of his father. ' The sympathy of the members of the club is extended to him in his bereavement.
Bill Morrison was noticed barracking for his team on Saturday. We are pleased to note that Bill has made such a £-ootl recovery from his serious illness.
Mr. Wallace James is presenting a valuable cup for competition within the club. The trophy will be allocated from season to season to the team having the best record throughout the year. The generosity of the-donor is greatly appreciated and should do much to stimulate interest within the club. No doubt as a mark of appreciation the trophy will be called the "Wallace James Cup."
We beg to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of a donation of £1 1/- from Mr J. Mitchell of Melling.
Dear, Dear Doctor,—" Thank you so much for the bottle of medicine you sent my mother-in-law. She nearly passed out. Please send another bottle. " —Yours etc. Husband: "Are you aware, my dear, that it takes three-fourths of my salary to meet your dressmaker's bills?-" Wife: "Goodness! What do you do with the rest of your money!" First Cannibal: "The chief has hay fever.' ' \ Second Cannibal: "Serves him right. We warned him not to eat that grass widow.''
