Kutt v. University.
The fodtball in this match was of quits, a good standard. Good back play interspersed with solid forward work, provided spectators with, a fine afternoon's sport. 'Varsity won owing to their superior back play; their movements were very nippy; Tile two tries in the second spell being very pretty movements topped off on each occasion by a fine sprint by the winger (Bailey). Some of the local movements were quite good, but two tries were lost because the wing three-quarter did not come in closer to his centre to take his pass, making it necessary for the former to cut in to try and find support. Some spectators assert that the centre threw away two tries by doing this, but to those who followed the game closely and intelligently, it appeared that the centre was unlucky not to score two tries. Some people are apt to watch the man with the ball too much, not taking into accounut how the rest of his team is placed. As Hutt has no chance of winning the championship, opportunity will no " doubt be taken to build up the team for next season, and in this connection - it might be stated that the players are with the coach in anyhing he does. Opportunity should be taken by all players to watch Byrnes daring a match; he varies his play considerably and there is method in every thing he does. During this particular match he cut in two oi* three times, but the backing up was not quite good enough to complete the movement successfully. On one occasion he cut in and got jammed, and so he threw the ball to a bunch of Hutt forwards who were just breaking up from a scrum. Unfortunately they did not make good use of the opportunity, because they were not expecting the pass. Another incident was when the blind side was worked, but was too well watched for the movement to succeed. Byrne immediately threw out a very long pass, to the open side which was snapped up and considerable ground gained. The other members of the team have to learn to expect these things, and turn the opportunity to account. Half an hour's talk on Thursday nights would do an immense amount of good. The team has yet to. meet Johnsonville, and it should be the ambition of every .member to try and stop their long run of success. With Peek back in the team (this wceki we nope;, tne line-out work will be considerably strengthened. Watts, a county rep, player from Leicester, turned out on Saturday and was watched pretty closely, and proved that he is a player above the average. Of good physique, he puts all his weight into the tight stuff and showed evidence of being a good dribbler. When opportunity offered he opened up the play, Hutt's first try being initiated by him. This player should make a good partner for Peck in line-out work, and should help to balance the scrum which at present is not too satisfactory. The coach is at a serious disadvantage, because, since he has taken over the team, the same side has not represented the club on any one consequently the team work is suffering. However, most of tne injured memoirs will soon be in action again, and the position will no
doubt be relieved.
" .fisher started off rather shakily, but settled down to a good solid display for the rest of the urternoon. Wood did lairly well on attack, but was not sure enough on defence. In; his ease it .seems lack of anticipation; he should run up to his opponent, not wait for him to come. McKay played a pretty sound game, and cannot be blamed for the lack of anticipation of his wings. Jurman, apart from one fault, played a sound game, his one fault being his inclination to get too far away from his centre, thus making it necessary for a very long pass to be thrown out with the risk of. interception. Janiian, however, is new to the position, and will soon settle down into the correct threequarter game. Smith was patchy, and lie was not able to follow Byrne' properly, due, no doubt, to the fact tgat he has not played alongside him before. Smith's fault appears to be in his delivery and taking of passes; he does not turn to-take, or pass the ball—a bad fault, because it means that he is doing his work blindly, and more often than not the pass will go astray. By turning to1 give a pass a player also protects himself, to a considerable extent, from a tackle. Slater showed good form "be: Mnd the serum and made several fine runs on the blind side, but did not
overdo his part. George is not playing quite so well as earlier in the season, but is one of the keenest members of the team, which speaks volumes for him. Watts, Fawcett and Sundgreeen were noticeable for good all round displays in the forwards, with Langford, Silva and Mclntosh grafting hard in the tight. McGill did some really good work at times, but was inclined to ~.v a .. a,-...y xrorn the serum too soon on occasions when his weight was needed. The hooking of Fawcett and ; .uiiugreen was : the best seen this season, but a lot of their work was nullified because the break aways were too anxious to get away before making certain that the ball was clear of the scrum. 'Varsity were able to regain possession. Lower Grade Results. Junion A defeated Varsity 6—3. Junior B lost to Oriental 48 —3. - Thirds defaulted to Onslow A. Intermediates defaulted to Kaiwarra. | Fourth A lost to Berhampore 6—3. Fourth B defeated Wellington 16—0. Fifths lost to Wellington 12 —0.
