CRITIC ABROAD

HEKE STBEET

Have you ever seen an ocean of mud? No, perhaps not, but I have seen a river of it. You can, too, if you like to walk up Heke Street.. Yesterday I had occasion to travel in that •direction, and all unsuspecting, set out. I did not even have a life-line, not even a walking stick, whereas, I was under the impression that in a moderately civilised' place, such as the Hutt, gum boots would be a little infra dig. At the corner of Thames street a little crowd was gathered gazing in wonder at the antics of a motor car. It was skidding most beautifully, just like an expert skater "cutting capers" on the ice. Figures of eight and Rotary mottoes were described at the high speed, while the driver clung desparately to the wheel and called blessing upon the head of the Borough engineer and his associates. (At least I suppose that was what he was doing). Finally the car came to rest against the, beaxitiful lamp post at the corner of Main Road. The driver, rather shaken, in an interview with me later stated that flying was no sport to be compared with gliding, and spoke of a club to be formed. I mentioned that I had a scooter, and asked to Join his club, but he said that the mud would be too deep for scooters. I left him bargaining for a supply of white posts I such as may be seen near Foxton to mark the road. He was afraid that motorists in general and members of the club in particular would try gliding along people's fences instead of "sticking" to the road. Doubtless more will be heard of this.
