A rare and 'beautifu lsight was seen in the .southern sky last night by those ■who happened* to out ot doors between ten ami" twelve o clock when Mature gave- a fine display of the phenomenon known as the Southern Lights. The ■horiaon from a point south-south-west round to south-south-east was filled witii a grey light like that ol early dawn. >t "extended upward about '20 degrees. merging into a deep orange, through •which the stars showed palely. From a -central ■point, due south beams of lights like fKe beams from a searchlight shot into the sky, one baud of particular brightness and consisting ot five or six beauts rose up from behind the Tararuas about half-past ten. Unfortunately the heavy bank ot clouds on the mountains and the clouds coining from the west spoiled the sight to a great extent. To people living in a more southern latitude and given a clear sky the sight must have oeen one of great 'beauty,
News has been received in Levin today of the- -death of Lance-Corporal Mills, formerly of the Levin puhlic echool teaching staff. Ueneral regret has been caused throughout the town, as the late Mr Mills was a popular citizen and a man of more than average ability and attainment.
