Magic
How is it done? was the most absorbing question to those who witnessed the remarkable feats of legerdemain by Hugard at the King's Theatre on Tuesday evening. Hugard'a great skill was shown in the very inst trick (a •card trick) and from then right to the end of what proved to oe one of* the. best performances of kind shown in Levin, people asked themselves: How is it done? and at every opportunity during the program, asked the questions of their neighbours, and got the same question in reply. Hugarcl's claim to be a master conjuror was sustained well, and his tricks with cards and rings Mere a revelations to oven those who have seen many, such tricks before. The "star" trick of the lot was the rifle feat, in which Hugnrd faced three regulation rifles fired point blank at liiiu from the rear of the theatre, stopped the bullets and returned them still hot, showing the marks of the rifling, to the firens. In the second half Hugard, as Chung Sung Loo, gave a wonderful exhibition of Oriental magic, which gained much from the Eastern setting. The design torn from paper and "the birth of flowers" were something out of the ordinary and the tableau was a fitting close to a great performance. A pleasant interlude was the performance of-Ohi-valli and his dog "Sport." The balancing feats were very good -and the dog gave plenty of evidence of good training. Other items in the program included two pianoforte solos played excellent by Madame Carroll: two songs that greatly pleased the audience by Miss Clare, and a hsillnd by Miss Errington, who also played the old melody "Sweet Chiming Bells" by ringing silver coins on a taljJe. and a xylophone solo. Miss Errmgton had to respond with an encore.
