—- ❖ — - THE BELGIAN FAIR. j I'liu Belgian Fair held in the lhakara llall was a great success. The committee spent the morning iu preparing the tables and decorating the hall with flags and flowers and ferns. These gave the building a beautiinl finished effect. Two large tables were erected the length of the hall and by •J p.lll. they were taxed lo the utmost with the various gilts, which were all ot a most useful and serviceable kind. Business, commenced at 2 p.m.. was very brisk by 3 p.m., when there was not standing room in the building. Mr 15. R. Gardener. Mayor of Ijevin, opened the proceedings. He spoke at length on the worthy object of the sale. :tnd commended the committee and residents on their splendid exhibition, and asked those present to loosen their purse string*. This the visitors did in good style. The takings by closing time iu the afternoon were close on £40. with the stalls well loaded with goods. Mr Vincent, of Levin, put up to auction a pet lamb kindly donated by Mrs Stratton, of Koputaroa, which was hought by Mr CJ orringe and put up again to auction. It was sold and re-sold twenty-five times. 'Hie list of purchasers is as under:—Mr Ot orringe CI Is: Messrs IS road belt. Valines, Kilsby. G. Mark, ss; M essrs Broadbelt, Vincent, S. liolsto.', Mrs Stratton, Mr Page, Dr Bryson, Messrs G. Kil\by, H. McMillan, B. it. Gardener lis Gd; Mr O. A. Mark £1 Is Gd The lamb realised in all the sum A JL'b. Various competitions were held during the alternoon and evening, Mrs Cole winning the ladies' nail-driving, Miss Saxon ladies' cliain-stepping, and Mr Webb men's chain-stepping. The ladies' hat-trimming (by men), was won by Mr Vincent. Mrs Kemp and Mrs Richardson acted as judges. In the weight-guessing lor sheep, Mr l\ Moxham guessed 'JSllbs. The actual live weight was 27">lbs. Giiiessing number of peas m a bottle— Mr S. A. Broadbelt guessed correctly: 128. Ladies' wood sawing was won by Mrs Cole: men's wood sawing uy Mr H. McMillan. Mr Vincent and Mr Broadbelt kindly donated their prizes to be sold again on behalf ol the fund. The evening proceedings opened at 7.30 with a crowded house. Miss Rita Lately played a piano selection and Misses Dynen, McTaggart. Murray and H road belt gave an exhibition of clubswinging. Other items were available but time would not allow of their beitig given. The unsold portion of the goods was auctioned at U p.m. and in most cases realised' good prices. The ladies' tea-room was well patronised : also the bran-tub run by Misses Rixon and Glassford. In all a most enjoyable afternoon and evening were spent, lesulting in the amount of £82 being take" with a little more money to come in. The cominitee appreciates the efforts of all who assisted to make the fair such a pronounced success A lull statement will be presented lo the press when the balance is completed.
