On Saturday night the Levin Brass Band gave its usual open-air concert in Ox lord-street.
'lhe annual picnic of the Manawato Flaxmill Employees' Union was held at Ashurst on Saturday and was largely attended. Had the weather not been so threatening in the morning the attendance would have been larger.
There was a good attendance at the tenuis court on Saturday when the lankee tournament was continued.
Mi- T. G. Vincent has received notice from the Defence Department of his apointment as lieutenant m command of the Levin Company of Cadets.
The I •longbtirn freezing works have been closed down for six weeks on account of the lack of ships to carry on tlie export trade.
The Dominion revenue lor the eleven months ended February 28, shows an increase of £37,329. During January and February Customs revenue declined by £174,000.
A Californian Holstein co\v, Tilly Alcartra, recently completed a twelve months' semi-official record which places her at the head of the milk-producing cows of the world. Tilly Alcartra's record in 365 days is 30.152.61bs of milk, 951.21bs of butter fat. This first milk record made under semi-offici.il test to cross the 30,0001bs lino, although its butter fat content does not approach the world's record.
On Wednesday afternoon next, in the Century Hall, at the sale of work in aid ol' the Melanesian Mission, musical items will be rendered by Misses Clark, McNickle, Scott, Gardener and Pink. In the evening the missionary pageant (in full dress) should be a great /ittraction. The programme arranged for the evening is as follows .-—Piano solo, Miss I. Pink; missionary pageant, children ; song, Mrs C. B. (Jollier; song. Mr Howe; song. Mrs Gardener, 'cello solo, Miss Remington ; song, Miss C. Remington; song, Mr Smith; pageant march repeated; piano solo, Miss F. Gardener.
On Saturday night in Oxford-street, Mr W. Simpson, sold on behalf of Mr P. Stewart, about 401 bs of grapes, the proceeds to go to the Belgian Relief Fund. Bidding was brisk and good prices were obtained. The first lib lot put up several times brought 12s 6d. The rest realised from 3s to 5s a lot. Several of the lots were put up over and over again and the total received must have amounted to a good sum. A rocking-horse, given by Mr J. Rose's little girl was sold for the same fund. A bag of pears given 'by Mr J. Dean and two Oayuga drakes given by Mrs P. TV. Goldsmith were also sold.. The total proceeds of the sale came to about £17.
Mr H. George, who has resided in Mauakau for many years, lias sold his property in that district. He intends to take up his residence in Levin.
The present price for tibre, £26 n Wellington, is causing great activity in the flax area of the Manawatu, and nearly all the mills are working at present. The few that are idle are short of flax to mill.
On Saturday 011 the juevin bowling greon a match was played ootween two rinks of local players skipped by McIntyre and Pyke, the former winning easily. .Following are the teams and scores:—Lodge, Wallace, Palmer Mclntyre (skip) 24. Bartholomew, Ingram, Jamieson, Pyke (skip) 13.
According to a report telephoned from Himitangi to the Manawatu Daily Times, the body of the late Mrs J. Dixon, of Bunnythorpe, was discovered about 10 miles from the t'oxton Heads at 1 o'clock 011 Saturday. The body was found in the sand, about three yards above nigh water, and with the exception of the head was covered with sand. It is surmised that she had fallen asleep, and 011 rising lost her way, and wandered further and furtlie" away in the opposite direction. A number of fruit cases evidently washed up by the sea, and collected by the deceased, were found near the body, having apparently been utilised as a protection from the wind. Probably Having become exhausted, she. lay down in the sand, and with the idea of attracting attention had torn a small piece of calico from her clothing, and with some wool from her stocking tied it to a piece of stick and placed it in the sand The late Mrs Dixon wa sabout 77 years of age, and disappeared from the Foxton Heads 011 January 3Dth.
