LEVIN WAR CLUB
AND SOLDIER'S HELP SOCIETY Levin War Club, an institution formed lu Levin on Wednesday night, "is an organisation founded to Dring together all "classes of men in a boncTof common interest. The club is to meet on alternate Wednesday's in each month to read tho history of the war and compile letters of local interest for lespatch to all those men at the war front"who hail from Levin and district, incidentally, too, the club will receive and despatch (on behalf of its own members and friends light articles of Food for betterment of the Hard rations that form the ordinary fare while on active service. It is in view of this branch of its activities that the Levin Wtfr Club bears its sub-title of "Soldiers Help Society"; it is not an addendum signifying ability to grant eelymosynary aid to distressed soldiers
The initial meeting of the club held in the Century Hall last night, was presided over by Major Burlinson and there also were present the Rev. A. C. Randorson and Messrs \V. Hughes, E. M. Herrick, H. H. Cork, Dr Davies, J. W. Gibson, C. S. Keedwell, N. O. Holciawny, W. Walton, F. O Smith. G. P. Brown, J. Mclntyre, S. Hall, and •W. Simpson. Apologies for non-at-tendance were received 1 from Mr B. R. Gardener (Mayor), Mr T. Broome and Mr Peter Stewart.
It was resolved to ask tho Borough Council for permission to meet in tho borough chambers twice monthly. Major Burlinson was elected chairman of the club and Messrs Banderson, Cork. Mclntyre and Dr Davies. vice-chairmen. A committee comprising Messrs Burlinson, Mclntyre, KeedweFl and Brown was set up to formulate rules of procedure, time allowed for individual speeches at debates, hour to be set apart for reading tHe war history, etc. This committee meets on Monday next to formulate its recommendations. Tho Rev. A. C. Randerson spoke of th'p need for holding a service of intercession in Levin on some Sunday in tho iioar future. The proposal was heartily eiidorseti by the meeting, ancl a hope expressed that Mr Randerson n-oukl consult liis fellow ministers in Levin with a view of holding an open-air service in the Eevin recreation ground. The club's hour of meeting was fixed for 8 o'clock sharp, and an understanding was come to that there would be no delay in opening the proceedings to suit late comers. The meeting passed a vote of thanks trt Major Burlinsou, by hearty acclamation, for his trouble and energy taken and expended to get the club started. An opinion wa,s expressed by one speaker that Levin's initiative was sure to be followed in various other towns and cities.
