The Manawatu Herald has b€en informed that Councillors Spiers and Whibley will not seek re-election for the Foxton Borough Council at the forthcoming municipal elections. As expected the recent A. and P. show proved a financial success, there being a credit balance of £150. The Bank of New Zealand has advanced tho Pahiatua Borough Council a special loan of £10,000 tor an electric light and power scheme. „ £ Tho Rev. W. H. E. Abbey is leaving Levin to-day for Christchurch where ho will attend the Church conference. He will be absent about a fortnight. The Levin municipal elections will be held oil the 28th April and .people who wish to vote should see that their names are placed on tho supplemnetary rolls and call at the Council Chambers and interview tho Town Clerk. All adults, whether ratepayers or not, over 1 the ago of 21 years, who have resided within the borough for three months preceding the election are entitled " o vote; also ratepayers with property in the borough have a vote ev'jn though they may reside outside the boundary. Tho election of a representatives For the Foxton Harbour Board and Wellington Harbour Board will he held on the same day on the same franchise. Some person or persons, with a knowledge of the good quality of meat sold by Mr T. Harris, broke into his shop some time last night or early this morning and took a quantity of meat and some of his widely celebrated beef sausages. There was a small sum of silver and copper in the till, and 1 a watch hanging on the wall, but neither was taken. Mr Harris acknowledges the compliment paid to him, but warns connoiseurs of meat that if caught paying a second visit the consequences will be unpleasant. At Christchurch Supreme Court yesterday Samuel Kraetzer, racecourse detective, claimed £1000 from the Lyttelton Times Co. for damages for libel alleged to have been contained in a paragraph in condensed correspondence." "Patriotic" asked why the Canterbury Jockey Club employs a German as a racecourse detective P Counsel lor plaintiff said that although Kraetzer was not mentioned by name he was identified as the person referred to. 'I he defence was a denial that the paragraph referred to plaintiff. The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff for £50 and costs. Tho Judge held that at a time like the present it is obnoxious to be called a Germau. Plaintiff gave evidence that he was Lorn in Victoria, and his parents wer Russians. Thomas Wallace, a labourer, committed suicide by cutting his throat with a butchers knifo St Gisborne. Deceased's manner had been peculiar during the evening. He was suffering from the effects of drink. Lady Liverpool continues to receive gifts for the soldiers. His Excellency states, however, that no more--knitted belts are required at present, but Bal-, aclavas, socks, and mitt-ens will always be acceptable.
