HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.
w MONTH! A' MEETING. Tho. Horowhenua County Council hold its usual monthly meeting in the Council Chambers, Oxford .street, Levin on Saturday last. There were present Councillors G. Watson (chairman), G. N. Stephenson, F. \Y. Venn, G. I'. Cat ley, G. A. Monk, S. A. Broadbelt, F. O. Retter, H. Freeman, and J. Kebbell. ' Referring to the complaint of Mr F. O. Smith no action was taken. In connection with the Noxious Weeds Act Councillor Monk said that the act should be enforced and Californian thistle should be kept in the schedule for if they grow the winds and streams will soon spread the seed. Councillor Stephenson supported the remarks of Councillor Monk. He saw small patches of California)! thistle 'n different parts o'f the County and it should bo kept in check. The Act should be enforced in his district if not in the whole county. Ho moved that the Board of Agriculture be notified that this Council is of opinion that the Noxious Weeds Act StfCiuld bo fully enforced in the whole district. Councillor Venn seconded the motion which was carried. Councillor Cutely moved and Councillor Monk seconded that the engineer be instructed to take land for the purpose of giving effect to the petitions of C. Wildsmith and others re extending the Hautere water-race. On the motion of Councillor Broadbelt and seconded by Councillor Retter it was decided that the engineer be instructed to take steps to re-grade where necessary Potts's road to make already for the metalling, etc. It was decided to call for applications for the right to cut and remove all grass from the Shannon cemetery. Councillor Stephenson moved that seven days' notice be given that all roads in the Tokomaru riding south of Makenut railway station be closed to stock. Councillor Venn seconded this and it was carried. Councillor Stephenson moved .and Councillor Broadbelt seconded that the dog tax lor the year 1!)1 •") be fixed at 2s (id for sheep and cattle dogs, and 10s l'or sporting and house dogs, and that R. Southee be appointed registrar for that portion of the- Tokomaru ridding north of the Makerua railway station. That application bo called for the position of registrar for the Wirokino riding, and Ranger Read be appointed registrar for the Otaki and To Horo Hidings. The remuneration in all cases to be at the rate of Dd.and 2.s (id. The same Councillors also moved that tenders he called lor metalling a portion of the Beach road .so as to obtain the subsidy of £ for £ lrom the Government. the lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted. Councillor Venn moved and Councillor .Stephenson seconded that all rates unpaid by the. 30th January be sued lor and that public notice be given to that effect.
