Horowhenua County Council.

MONTHLY MEETING. Through the proximity of Easter, Horowhenua County Council ia holding its monthly meeting this morning—two days earlier than usual. Councillor Richards is presiding. Councillor Drake is absent, through > continued indisposition. Councillor J. Prouse is not present, he being still away from Levin on a holiday jaunt. A summary of the correspondence to be read and considered by the council to-day is appended. The Railway Department wrote that the level crossing: over the railway at Bryce street (li'Oiar Shannon railway station) was closed in 1909 because it was dangerous. The council agreed in this stop The district engineer of railways now intimates that he cannot recommend the department to reopen the crossing, as in addition to the increased danger with the growth of traffic, a crossing in such a. position would interfore seriously with the working of the railway yard at Shannon. Mr S. W. Carter wrote asking that the council gi\e its earliest attention to the forming of a road in Grand street, Shannon, to give access to two new Rouses erected there by Mr Carter. Mr W.. Dalziell, Koputaroa, on behalf of Koputaroa Fibre Company, asked permission to lay an 8-inch earthernware pipe under the roadway, the company undertaking that traffic would" not be impeded. The pipe is required to allow of a sufficient intake from the drain on the. south side of the Koputaroa-Foxton road. Mr A. J. P. Horn, Koputaroa, asked tt) have the drain in front of his property cleaned, as it was damming water on to the property. The District Engineer of Railways wrote that the councils application for a public level crossing south of Otaki bridge*—asked for on behalf of a property owner— had to be declined. Crossing over the line only would be allowed by means of an overbridge, at an estimated cost of £360 to the County Council, which also would have to undertake the construction of approaches.
